It is true to say that one can judge the quality of government by how much commitment it provides to The Arts.
The Carr/Iemma Labor Government has neglected The Arts for many years. There has been a steady fall in funding to arts establishments and institutions. They are the first to lose out when the Government announces that money is to be saved.
The budget for the state's cultural instituions has decreased by 0.8% when this year's budget is compared to the budget allocated in 2006-07. But in reality the institutions have 3.5% ($8.5m) less to spend than they had last year because the revised budget was actually $6.5m more than budgeted. The impact on these budget programs will be considerable when pay increases and inflation is taken into account.
* State Library of NSW has $340,00 less to spend
* Australian Museum has $590,000 less to spend
* Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences has $5.6million less to spend .
* The Historic Houses Trust has $463,000 less to spend.
* The Arts Gallery of NSW has a $1.4million less to spend
* NSW Film and Television Office has $120,000 less to spend.

Cuts to Library grants
And grants to libraries have been cut by four percent.
NSW continues to provide less for public libraries than any other state and less than half the national average.
