Shadow Minister for Medical for Science and Medical Research

Jillian Skinner has been NSW Shadow Minister for Health between March 1995 and March 2003 then again from September 2005.

Being Shadow Health Minister means keeping a check on whether the government is providing high quality health services for the people of NSW.

It requires regular meetings with health professionals and their associations, many discussions and much correspondence with patients and their families and visits to institutions across NSW.

It involves highlighting issues and responding to legislative matters in Parliament, Parliament, in speeches and the media and developing policies which the Coalition would adopt in government.

The Shadow Minister believes that:

• 'Health care should be as much about encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles as about treating their ailments' (Australian Financial Review March 4-5, 2006), 
  

• Real community and clinician involvement in health should be restored with better information and involvement in decisions about what is provided, where and how,

• There needs to be fairer distribution and better use of resources,

• Better and more timely access to all levels of health care is imperative,
  

• Where patients require treatment, they should be able to enjoy the best quality outcomes,

• There needs to be greater investment in health, not only to improve access to services, but to add value to NSW medical research.
